Welcome It is an exciting time to be a Democrat. President Obama’s historic election has set the stage for positive change on a national level: government that is fair, pro-active, and unafraid to tackle the challenges Americans face in these tough economic times. Locally, Easton’s Democratic leaders continue to feel privileged to represent your interests, working hard to achieve the goals that matter to our whole community: good schools, manageable taxes, better town planning and services. For decades, Easton’s town government was dominated by an entrenched Republican old-boys’ network, which routinely failed our town. Problems were allowed to fester, becoming more difficult and expensive to solve, whether it was over-crowding of the schools and delayed building projects, or the disposition of the much-threatened South Park property. A culture of laziness and a lack of accountability prevailed. Recent years have seen more balance in our town government, much-needed bipartisanship on critical issues, and refreshing turnover on town boards. However, as the Republican majority on the Board of Finance has again demonstrated during this budget season—by stubbornly adopting a 0% tax impact budget proposal that will cause significant damage to our schools and town services--too many of our elected officials follow their own rigid partisan ideologies rather than serving the needs of the broader public. It is essential for Easton’s leaders to find innovative solutions to the problems we face; to engage in an open, honest dialog with town residents; and to forge compromises that meet the needs of all segments of our community, rather than pandering to their hard-core political base. Easton is a wonderful town, but it is at a crossroads. Like many New England towns, we are faced with the challenge of providing critical town services and a quality education for our children, while keeping taxes manageable for our residents--especially seniors on fixed incomes. We must also deal with the constant threat of development, which could change the appealing rural character of our town if we do not plan thoughtfully for the years ahead. Today, we need leaders who are not only experienced but have the creativity and vision to guide Easton into the future. Election Day is November 3, 2009. Between now and then, I encourage you to examine the positions of the parties and the candidates for office on the substantive issues that face our town. Please check the website regularly to learn more about our Democratic team. In a small town like Easton, grassroots political activity is the most effective way to make a meaningful difference in our collective quality of life. We welcome your participation in that effort!
